The Research Project

The collaborative research project STADT:up brings together 22 partners, consisting of automobile industry, suppliers, and research institutions. Supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, they have been working on the challenging task of developing continuous automated driving for urban areas and sustainable, intermodal mobility concepts for the city since January 2023.

Not only are the latest AI-based methods and data-driven models along the entire signal processing chain being researched, but also pioneering interaction concepts for continuous automated driving in the city. Building on this, experienceable driving functions are being developed, which are being tested and demonstrated in challenging inner-city traffic scenarios.

  • Concepts and pilot applications for continuous automated driving in inner-city traffic. The following are being developed:
    • AI-based methods and data-driven models along the entire signal processing chain
    • pioneering interaction concepts
    • driving functions that can be experienced and demonstrated in challenging traffic situations
  • Concepts for sustainable, intermodal mobility in urban areas

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action:

"Climate change, demographic change and attractiveness: Germany's conurbations and urban centres are facing a wide range of challenges today. One of the most complex tasks facing local authorities is to rethink urban mobility. Automation and intelligent networking of public and private transport offer great potential for meeting people's individual mobility needs. As a hub for automotive innovation and engineering excellence, Germany offers excellent conditions for developing the necessary technologies, concepts and applications. The funding of the STADT:up collaborative project within the framework of the "New Vehicle and System Technologies" programme is a sustainable investment in the future in several respects: it not only helps to strengthen our country's top-selling industry - and thus to secure hundreds of thousands of jobs in the long term; at the same time, by supporting this lighthouse project, we are setting an important milestone on the way to safer, more efficient and - as a result - climate-friendly mobility in cities that are worth living in."
